In Memory Of
Monte Dennis Mehring
1949 - 2022

Monte D. Mehring, age 72, died at home in Overland Park, Kansas, on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Monte Dennis Mehring was born October 14, 1949, the son of Harry and June (Nieland) Mehring in Jamestown, ND. He attended Stephen High School in Stephen, Minnesota, and graduated in 1967.

In 1971, Monte graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science.

Monte married his bride, Ruth Arnston, on January 2, 1971, in Maddock, ND.

He worked for Uniroyal Tire in Detroit, MI, designing tires for a few years before moving to Beaverton, OR, to begin work with Freightliner from 1974 to 1988. While in Oregon, Monte and Ruth's family was blessed with the addition of Nicole, Paul, Stephanie, and Michael.

The family then moved to Overland Park, KS, in 1988 when Daimler Trucks of North America relocated his position.

Continuing with Daimler, Monte and Ruth returned to Oregon in 2002, living in Tigard. By then, all the children had left home. Living far from family, they developed the habit of frequently traveling to visit their loved ones throughout the country.

In 2007, Monte and Ruth once again moved courtesy of Daimler to the new corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC. They made their home in Lake Wiley, SC, before Monte retired in 2012. The following year they returned to Overland Park, KS, to be near family.

In retirement, Ruth and Monte traveled the world with friends, visited their children's families on the east coast as well as their brothers and their children in North Dakota and Minnesota. They spent their anniversaries in Melbourne, FL, where they took daily walks on the beach for a few months each winter. When they weren't traveling, Monte was never without a project, whether it was improving their home and yard, brewing beer, or concocting his favorite hot sauce. One of his favorite retirement activities was helping his adult children or neighborhood friends with construction-type projects.

Nothing made him happier than sharing times with his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of his children.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth; four children, Nicole (Zachary) Schmidt, Springfield, VA; Paul (Leigh) Mehring, Elgin, SC; Stephanie (Tyson) Thedinger, Overland Park, KS; Michael (Laura) Mehring, Olathe, KS; soon to be nine grandchildren, Henry Schmidt, Elise Thedinger, Evelyn Schmidt, Emory Thedinger, Greta Thedinger, Robert Thedinger, Ingrid Thedinger, Macks Mehring, the imminent Wesley Mehring; brothers Mitch (Jane) Mehring, Humble, TX; Matt Mehring, Minneapolis, MN; Mason (Lori) Mehring, Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Sona Mehring, Egan, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and relations.

Monte is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and June Mehring of Carrington, ND.

The family requests that contributions in Monte’s memory be made to The ALS Association Mid-America Chapter.
