Listen to Obituary

Van Wesley Finney, a devoted father, beloved grandfather, and proud Navy veteran, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas. Born on April 17, 1957, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Van’s life was rooted in the values of service, family, generosity and kindness.

Van’s journey began in Coffeyville, where he entered the world as the cherished son of George and Mary Ellen Finney. Raised with a strong sense of family and community, Van carried those principles with him throughout his life. After the passing of his father, he grew close to his step-father, Eddie Youngberg, further enriching his family bonds.

Answering his country’s call, Van proudly served in the United States Navy. His time in the military shaped him, instilling in him a profound sense of duty and responsibility—traits that became cornerstones of his character and were evident in every aspect of his life.

Van found deep joy and fulfillment in his role as a father and grandfather. He is remembered with enduring love by his son, Brandon Finney; his daughter, Kayla Burton; his son-in-law, Brad; and his cherished granddaughters, Madison and Lily. His legacy extends through his bonus sons, Matthew Dinsmore, Michael Privette, James Stanley (Wife Melissa) and their families (Scarlett Dinsmore, Carlie Stanley, Oliver Stanley, Tyler Stanley and Molly Stanley). Van’s warmth, sense of humor and guidance were constants in the lives of all his children and grandchildren.

Van is survived by his sister, Gwen Johnston, and brother-in-law, Tony Johnston; his nephew, Tark Johnston; his brother, Jerry Finney, and sister-in-law, Pam; and his nephew, Craig Finney.

He is reunited in peace with his beloved wife, Rhonda Finney, who preceded him in death, as well as his parents, George and Mary Ellen Finney, and his step-father, Eddie Youngberg. The memory of their love and companionship was a source of enduring comfort to Van throughout his life.

Family and friends are invited to remember and honor Van’s life at a visitation on July 3, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS 66062.
