Rose Marie (Maloney Inbody) Madden, 91, of Olathe, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. She touched the hearts of those in her life through her gentle kindness, caring spirit and unconditional love. A lifelong Catholic, Rose found great strength in her faith during challenging times and comfort at the end of her life.
Rose was born on October 29, 1933 in Inwood, New York. She was the second of seven children born to Tom and Rose (Harrington) Maloney, who were Irish immigrants. After graduating from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in 1951, Rose attended Kings County Hospital, School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York, where she graduated with a nursing degree in 1954.
On a blind date set up by her sister, Anne, Rose met Donald Edward Inbody, the love of her life. After an extended relationship, often long-distance, they were married on April 16, 1955 in Hewlett, New York. Rose and Don lived in Don’s hometown of Sharpsville, Pennsylvania and Endicott, New York for a short time before moving to Sharon, Pennsylvania. It was here that the first three of their six children were born.
In 1962, Rose and Don purchased their first home in Youngstown, Ohio. They would remain in Youngstown for more than a decade and welcome two more children to the family. Rose often shared fond memories of their time in Youngstown, as the children were growing up. Then, in 1973, the family made a monumental move to Hutchinson, Kansas. Having grown up in the city, the rural environment was an adjustment for Rose, but it also brought the joy of her sixth child. Five years later, the family moved to Olathe, Kansas, where Rose has lived for the last 47 years. In Olathe, Rose was an active member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church since its founding in 1979.
Rose stopped working outside the home to raise the children, but after more than a twenty-year hiatus, she returned to nursing in 1977. When the family moved to Olathe, Rose began working at the Olathe Medical Center where she remained for nearly twenty years.
Rose deeply enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She took the time to develop and maintain unique relationships with each of her children, which could be challenging given the size of the family. Whether it was a birthday, holiday or school event, Rose made sure each child felt special. She also challenged herself in other ways. Whether it was taking computer classes, traveling to new places, or just completing a daily crossword puzzle, Rose was willing to try new things and sought to keep her mind sharp. Late in life, she developed an interest in football and cheering on her beloved Kansas City Chiefs. Rose found pleasure in music, reading, going to the movies, or simply spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed her annual spring trip to Florida with her sisters where she spent the days catching up, playing games, and sharing an occasional bottle of wine. Sometimes referred to as “the quiet sister,” Rose was not one to call attention to herself, but she was never shy about sharing the adventures and accomplishments of her family, for whom she was always proud.
Don passed away on December 21, 1982. Rose met Steve Paul Madden through a friend at church, and they were married on July 28, 1990 in Olathe. Steve passed away on October 30, 1991. Besides Don and Steve, Rose was preceded in death by her sisters, Anne Kearney and Nora Doria, and her brothers Jim Maloney and Father Tom Maloney. She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Wilt and Kay Leonard, her six children, Laura Kenny, Diane Inbody (Jim Brier), Paul Inbody (Kathy Inbody), Barbie Anderson (Tracy Anderson), Dave Inbody (Julie Drey) and Amy Inbody, 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
