Richard Frank Currey

January 27, 1936 — May 10, 2025

Richard Frank Currey, age 89, of Overland Park, Kansas, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on May 10, 2025. He was born in Buffalo, New York, to Norman and Evelyn Currey (née Hill) of Derby, New York.

Richard graduated from Lake Shore High School in Angola, NY, in 1957 and earned an Associate's Degree in Chemistry from Erie County Community College. He worked with diligence throughout his career as a chemist at National Gypsum, Agway, Union Carbide, and Elkem Metals, and spent the last 30 years faithfully driving a school bus—continuing until the age of 85. His steady presence and strong work ethic left a quiet impact on everyone he served.

On November 25, 1966, he married Barbara Janet Currey (née Vail), with whom he shared a loving marriage of nearly 59 years. Together they raised two children: Nathan Currey (Janey Mills Currey) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Alyssa Harris (Matt), serving with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A faithful member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Overland Park for 17 years, Richard humbly served in many roles—including years as a church usher, and, in his previous church, Bible Presbyterian Church of Grand Island, NY, as both an elder and later a deacon. He was known for his quiet, rock-steady faith, his behind-the-scenes mercy, and a friendly smile for everyone he met. His life left a quiet but lasting mark on everyone he encountered—from his family and church to neighbors and children on his bus route.

He will be remembered by many for his steady faith, gentle kindness, and servant’s heart—always ready with a warm handshake and a welcoming word. In God’s providence, his final moments reflected the peace and humility with which he lived—surrounded by love, doing what he loved, and ready to see his Savior face to face.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, their children, and six grandchildren: Emily Fictorie (Jonathan), Josh Currey (Ruth), Rebekah Currey, Meghan Currey, Josiah Harris (Alina), and Caleb Harris; and three great-grandchildren: Eden Harris, Miriam Harris, and Lance Currey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Norman.

A visitation will be held at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 9333 W. 159th St., Overland Park, KS 66221, on Wednesday, May 14, at 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 5:00 PM. To view a livestream of the service, click on the following:  link.redeemer-pca.org/514
