Rebecca Sue South
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rebecca Sue South, age 90, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Rebecca was born November 11, 1934, in Centralia, Illinois and went home to be with the Lord on February 11, 2025, in Olathe, Kansas.
She is survived by her only son Cameron (Sheryl), three grandchildren; Lyndsay, Chad and Kristen, her great-grandson Anthony, and many other dearly loved family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howell & Lexie Kirks, her husband of 64 years, Richard South, brother Bob Kirks and her beloved twin, Betty Kirkland, her niece Charlene Hoak and nephew, Andy Kirkland.
Rebecca received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University, graduating Summa Cum Laude of her class. Teaching became the passion of her life. She absolutely loved every student that walked through her doors. As a second-grade teacher, she always would say “they come to you reading” and then the exploration began. She literally became one of the best teachers ever, receiving the honor of “Teacher of the Year” in the Crestwood School District.
After her retirement from teaching, she enjoyed working at Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum. In 2010, she was nominated for the prestigious Rose Award for exceptional customer service to Metro Detroit visitors.
Rebecca was a lifelong educator. She made a lasting impression on students and colleagues alike. She inspired all to follow the belief that “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”
Grandma South/Aunt Becky will be missed by her family for many reasons, especially her playful spirit and laughter. She made everything fun! In memory of her…read a book. Take a walk in the park. Drink a coke. Blow some bubbles. Be kind to a stranger. Smile and love Jesus.
