Phyllis M. Sanderson-Haerter

October 29, 1941 — May 31, 2025

Phyllis M. Sanderson-Haerter of Olathe, KS passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 31st. Phyllis was born October 29, 1941 in Hosmer, SD to Arnold and Naomi Hieb. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Hosmer High School. She then attended business college in Aberdeen, SD.

While in college, Phyllis met and then married Larry Sanderson in 1962. They had two children, Kevin and Suzanne, and in 1966, they made Kansas City their home. They divorced in 1974 and Phyllis remained single for many years.

Phyllis began her career in 1967 at the Kansas City Board of Trade with Peavey Co. In 1974, Phyllis became the first woman member in the 118 year history of the Kansas City Board of Trade…. a career milestone and an achievement she was very proud of. She worked at the Kansas City Board of Trade for 40 years and retired in 2007 from MF Global.

In 2006, Phyllis reconnected with Charles (Chuck) Haerter who she knew while growing up in Hosmer. They dated for several years and married in January 2009. Finding each other at this time in their lives brought them so much happiness and was a blessing to both of them. They traveled and split their time between Lake Havasu, AZ, Hosmer, SD, and Kansas City.

After Chuck’s passing in 2014, Phyllis returned home to Olathe, so she could be near her children and her grandsons, Jake and Lane. Family was everything to her! She loved planting and tending her flowers, always had a “to-do” list, loved projects (hers or helping others), enjoyed time with her friends, frequent trips back to Hosmer to be with her siblings, and was the happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis is survived by her son Kevin Sanderson, her daughter Suzanne Turley (David Forslund), grandchildren Jake Turley (Josie), Lane Turley, and great-granddaughter Elsie Turley, sisters Patty Hollan (Dennis) and Karen Ballweg (Keith), and brothers Stan Hieb and Kenny Hieb (Fran). Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents Arnold and Naomi Hieb, husband Charles Haerter, previous husband Larry Sanderson, and son-in-law Steve Turley.

Phyllis was an amazing mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A visitation will be held Monday, June 9th, from 6-8 pm at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS.  A Time of Remembrance will be held at 6:30 pm.  Phyllis will be laid to rest in Hosmer, SD.
