Nancy Jo Matthews

Nancy Jo (Hemphill) Matthews, 86, of Sequim, Washington, passed away quietly on June 7, 2023. She was born in 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Mary and Harry Hemphill of Alton, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by John, her husband of 67 years, and John Alan, her eldest son.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law--Harry (Denise) of Olathe, Kansas, Andy (Anne) of Decatur, Illinois, Kenneth of Lincoln, Illinois, and Jason (Lura) of Buena Vista, Colorado--and by three grandchildren, Spencer, Kelsey, and Justin.
Nancy married her high school sweetheart, John, in Alton, Illinois, on April 7, 1955. The couple settled in Manhattan, Kansas. Nancy was an avid quilter, gardener, and dog trainer, and for many years she was involved in the business community in Manhattan as the owner of a bookstore. In recent years she and John traveled around North America in their RV, frequently joined by friends and family. Her love and loyalty will be missed.
A graveside service will take place on June 20th at 2pm at Upper Alton Cemetery, 2090 Oakwood Ave., Alton, IL 62002.
