Listen to Obituary

Nancy Mason Byram lived a life defined by kindness, creativity, laughter, and a deep love for the people gathered around her. On February 14, 2026—fittingly, a day devoted to love—she went home to heaven, leaving behind a legacy of warmth that will continue to bless all who knew her.

Nancy was born November 4, 1952, in Wichita, Kansas, to Bob and Ruth Mason, and was raised in Leawood, Kansas. She graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1970, already carrying the joyful spirit and quick humor that would become her signature. Nancy had a way of making every room brighter—often with a smile, a perfectly timed comment, or an offer of something delicious to eat.

She attended Kansas State University, earning a degree in design and discovering a lifelong passion for creativity. Her remarkable fabric landscapes reflected both imagination and heart, earning awards and, more importantly, touching the lives of many who experienced her work. Nancy later returned to school to study accounting and business, a step that led her to fulfill a dream of owning and operating Nancy’s Hallmark store, where her love for celebration and people came together in the most natural way. She closed her professional journey managing the bookstore at Johnson County Community College, continuing to share her warmth with students, coworkers, and friends.

While Nancy’s accomplishments were many, her greatest joy was always family. She loved gathering people together—especially if it involved food, snacks, and a good game night. She loved a full snack bowl, her encouragement was never in short supply, and her competitive streak during family game nights was matched only by the laughter that followed. Being loved by Nancy meant being cared for in quiet, faithful, and deeply meaningful ways.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband of 24 years, Steve Byram; her stepdaughters, Cindy Hake and Debbie Hoban; her devoted sisters, Peggy Van Auken (Dan) and Cindy Irey (Randy); her step grandsons, and many cherished nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who became family.

Those who knew Nancy will remember her gentle strength, her creative spirit, her humor, and the unmistakable feeling of being welcomed and loved in her presence. Her life was a gift, her love endures, and her light will shine in our hearts forever. We can honor her by reading a note found in her own writing.

“View obstacles as challenges. When you get lost, ask for help. Celebrate your victories. Practice gratefulness every day. Laugh often and long.”

A celebration of life is to be determined.
