Miss Mary Helen Neal
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Helen Neal, born Mary Helen Skillman on August 10, 1931, who left us peacefully on September 28, 2025, at the age of 94. Mary Helen was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, musician, teacher, and friend. She was married to Ben Neal for 66 wonderful years, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
Mary Helen was the proud mother of two children, B. Kevin Neal and Benna Renee. She was preceded in death by her husband Ben and her daughter Benna, who she now joins in eternal rest. And her greatest joy was being Grandma to her grandson, Garrett.
Mary Helen's life was marked by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength. She touched the lives of many and will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes and compassionate heart. Her legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved her.
Mary Helen was a music major, receiving her undergraduate degree from Central Missouri State University, and her master’s degree from Kansas University. She was an avid Jayhawker (ultimately becoming a bigger sports fan than her husband who was a renowned coach, referee and umpire). While working on her master’s she was selected to participate in a prestigious program supporting patients at Menninger Sanitarium and Psychopathic Hospital with a focus to merge medical practice, research and education. She was a pioneer for music therapy and women’s representation in education and research.
Throughout her music teaching career, Mary Helen dedicated herself to nurturing young minds, inspiring countless students through her love of music and her innovative teaching methods. She was celebrated for her ability to bring out the best in others, fostering both personal and academic growth in everyone she encountered. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping the lives of colleagues and friends alike. For many years Mary Helen was also the music director at Grandview United Methodist Church. Her passion for music, teaching and supporting her faith and community well represented.
A graveside service will be held to honor her life on October 2, 2025, which is a most fitting date as it is Ben’s birthday, the greatest gift of being reunited again. The service will take place at 3:00pm at Olathe Memorial Cemetery, located at 738 North Chestnut Street, Olathe, KS 66061. Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Mary Helen Neal whose impact will continue to be felt by all who loved her.
