In Loving Memory of Lyn

Lynette Kay Van Pelt Cade Ketterman, 78, of Olathe, KS, passed away on July 30, 2024. She was born in Junction City, KS, on September 18, 1945, to Curtis K. Van Pelt and Doris Naomi Lyne Van Pelt. Lyn lived a life filled with love, joy, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.

When Lyn was very young, the Van Pelt family settled in Wellington, KS, to own and manage a Gambles hardware store. Growing up alongside her younger brother and sister in this vibrant community, Lyn cherished her childhood memories and maintained lifelong friendships. As a child, she participated in Girl Scouts, 4-H, and her church, First Christian of Wellington. Lyn married her childhood sweetheart, Michael Cade, in June 1965 at that same church.

Lyn attended Texas Women’s University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics—fitting for someone who devoted her life to raising children and supporting families, not just her own.

After several moves across the states, Lyn and Mike settled in Olathe with their two children. Over the years, she was actively involved in many organizations, including Bible Study Fellowship, food co-ops, and volunteering with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. After her children were grown and following the death of her first husband, Lyn became a Parent Educator with Olathe District Schools, a role she cherished as she had a deep love for little children.

A woman of profound faith, Lyn was an active member of her church communities. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Olathe, where she held several leadership positions, including Deacon and Clerk of Session, and acted as the de facto kitchen coordinator. Later, she became a member of Community Covenant Church in Lenexa, KS, where she continued to volunteer regularly. Her commitment to her faith was evident in all her endeavors.

With a passion for gardening, Lyn often shared the fruits of her labor with friends and neighbors. She was also a wonderful cook, always eager to prepare meals for others. Her love for the outdoors shone through in her enthusiasm for camping, hiking, and bicycling. She especially enjoyed participating in Bike Across Kansas each year, where she created many fond memories, forged close friendships, and took on several volunteer roles. Lyn met her second husband, Lyndon Ketterman, while participating in BAK in 1997.

Lyn married Lyndon Ketterman in 1999, and together they shared many wonderful adventures. They traveled to visit friends across the country, explored Alaska and Hawaii, embarked on numerous family camping trips, remained active in BAK and their church, hosted countless dinner parties, and engaged in several home renovation projects over the past 25 years.

Lyn is survived by her beloved spouse, Lyndon Ketterman; her daughter, Meili Cade Brady; son-in-law, Matthew Brady; son, Jason Cade; daughter-in-law, Tina Waliczek; three cherished grandchildren, Maura, Michael Jane, and Meriel Brady; her sister, Jane Van Pelt Reeves; her brother, Thom Van Pelt; and more beloved friends who she considered family than can be enumerated.

She was predeceased by her parents and her first husband, Mike.

A memorial service to celebrate Lyn's life will be held at Community Covenant Church, 15700 W 87th St Pkwy, Lenexa, KS, 66219. All are welcome.

Lyn's kindness, love, and dedication to her family and friends will be profoundly missed. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and unwavering faith.
