Joan Marie Bergquist

October 18, 1934 — June 8, 2022

Joan Marie Bergquist, 87, passed peacefully at Clover Care homes (Shawnee, KS), on June 8, 2022. Joan was born in Minnesota on October 18, 1934 to Nathan and Blanche Hickok. Joan was very proud of the fact that she was a descendent of Wild Bill Hickok and his place in history. Joan completed her high school education and attended one year of college at the University of Minnesota. Joan then moved to Chicago where she attended TWA flight attendant school and briefly worked for the railroad as a train car attendant. After which she moved to
Martin City, MO where she managed to survive the Ruskin Heights 1957 tornado. Joan has lived in Illinois, Washington, Germany, Michigan, Montana, Minnesota, and Colorado--finally settling in Olathe, KS in 1970.

Joan enjoyed a successful career in Real Estate first as an agent then becoming an investor. She owned multiple rental properties throughout Olathe from 1972-2010--finally retiring
completely in 2010.

Joan deeply enjoyed holidays with her family throughout the year. Each holiday she would decorate her yard with huge cutout figures and lights. Her decorations were so elaborate that she was featured many times in the Olathe Daily News and the KC star. Her decorations were so eye catching that drew a crowd and they even caused a couple of automobile accidents from all the Looky Lou's.

Joan was an avid collector and had a true love for dolls. Dedicating one whole bedroom of her home to her "doll room". Over the years she collected hundreds of dolls.

Joan loved her family, especially her 8 grandchildren and her 8 great grandchildren. She started many traditions with them that they continue to this day. Every year Easter weekend, she would have all the grandkids come and dye eggs. Then on Easter, every year she had a huge candy filled piñata and toy/candy filled baskets for all the kids who came—this often included more than just family.

She was a world traveler and every year for spring break she took her children and grandchildren on a family cruise. It began as a senior trip for the older grands and continued for several years. These memories and life experiences will be cherished forever. The family was often well known on each ship for all the laugher and fun that followed them. Joan was always the life of the party and the center of attention. She loved choosing outfits for her three youngest grandsons to match on the trips, they were dubbed the matching triplets. Later in life, Joan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It truly was heartbreaking to watch such a vibrant, successful, intelligent woman slowly disappear. The family would like to thank the
director of Clover Care Homes, Melanie Klover, and the excellent nursing staff for loving the queen of their family and taking such amazing care of her for the past 9 years. She truly had the best care possible, and thanks will never be enough.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Clark and her son, Leslie Alex Bergquist. She is survived by her daughters, Roxanne (Randy) Bragaw, Jeanne (Bob) Dykmann, and Vicki (Kent) Leiker, 2 brothers and their wives that reside in Minnesota, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great
grandchildren.

Joan was an excellent mother, grandma, and great grandma. She will be missed but will continue to live on forever in our hearts.
