Listen to Obituary

Janet Lynn Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and woman of faith, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, in Leawood, Kansas. She was 81 years old.

Born December 3, 1944, in North Platte, Nebraska, Janet grew up with a creative spirit and a gift for connecting with people that would define her throughout her life. She attended North Platte High School before going on to earn her Education degree from Kearney State College — a foundation that served her well in a lifetime of teaching others, both formally and through the example she lived every day.

Janet built a beautiful career as an Interior Decorator, bringing her artistic eye and warm sensibility into the homes of countless clients. Her love of painting and drawing was a natural extension of who she was — someone who saw beauty in the world and knew how to share it. Whether she was arranging a room, sketching at her easel, or hunting for the perfect find on a shopping trip, Janet approached life with enthusiasm and joy.

Those who knew her best will remember her as the life of the party — the one who lit up a room the moment she walked in. She had a natural gift for public speaking and loved nothing more than sharing her testimony, a calling she answered faithfully through her decades of involvement with the Christian Women's Club. Her faith in Jesus Christ was not a quiet thing; it was the foundation of everything she did, the source of her strength, and the heart of the legacy she leaves behind.

Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Gary Smith, with whom she built a life full of love and devotion. She is survived by her son Craig Smith and his wife Jennie; her daughter Kindra Wilson and her husband Bill; and her cherished grandchildren, Jake and Garrett Wilson. She was a devoted friend to many, and those who had the privilege of knowing her carry her warmth with them still.

Janet lived with an open heart, an unwavering trust in her Lord, and a smile that made everyone around her feel at home. She is deeply missed — and beautifully remembered.
