Harold Eugene Nelson, 72, passed away November 8, 2025. A visitation will be held Wednesday, November 12th from 6-8pm at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe Chapel. Funeral services and burial will follow in Evansville, IN.

Harold was born in Quitman, Mississippi, on October 27, 1953, to Eva Charlean Nelson and Donnell Lewis, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his stepson, Alonzo Stewart.

He was a proud member of Mt. Pisgah Lodge #20 of Owensboro, Kentucky, where he served as an Honorary Past Master. He was also a member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, under the jurisdiction of Kentucky.

He graduated from Owensboro High School and Owensboro Business College

He was hired at Western Kentucky Gas, which was eventually acquired by Atmos Energy. Harold dedicated 50 years of service to the company and retired in Olathe, Kansas, in October 2022 as a Safety Specialist.

Harold loved volunteering at events for Atmos Energy. Traveling and enjoying fine cuisine brought him great joy. He cherished time spent with his son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his beloved wife. Special memories were made with friends at the American Legion in Evansville, Indiana. He later attended and cherished the fellowship of Independence Baptist Church in Evansville, Indiana.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Betty Sue Nelson of 37 years; his son, Antonio Donnell Harris (Amanda) of Owensboro, KY; one stepson, Michael Lee Stewart of Columbus, OH; one sister, Carolyn J. Cardwell of North Las Vegas, NV; two aunts, Lula Bell Stokes of North Las Vegas, NV, and Mary Helen Gordon of Moreno Valley, CA; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and work associates.

Harold’s friendships extended across the United States. He deeply loved his neighbors and was part of a close-knit group known as “The Wyandotte Family.”
