Evelyn Jane Rucas, a cherished homemaker whose life embodied kindness, compassion, and making friends wherever she went, passed away on May 5, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born on June 3, 1940, in Wichita, Kansas. She met her husband, Larry Rucas in the Junior high band. They went to separate high schools but were reacquainted when they went on a double date with mutual friends after high school. They were married January 15, 1960. Evelyn and Larry created a loving home and raised their three children, Kemberly, Dwayne and Christopher. Along with being a homemaker, she contributed to the family by working at Wichita Radiological Group in the billing department. Larry’s job took them to Raleigh, NC. After 3 years, they moved again to Bentonville, AR. After retirement they began to travel. They made it to all 50 states. Eventually they wintered in Arizona and spent summers in Alaska.
Evelyn's legacy is woven through the many meals she cooked for family and friends. A talented cook, she poured her heart and soul into every meal. Her hospitality was unparalleled; she loved to entertain, ensuring that every gathering was a special occasion. Evelyn's passion extended beyond the kitchen, as she found joy in crafting and card-making. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband, Larry; her daughter, Kemberly (Mike) and her sons, Dwayne and Christopher, grandchildren Cameron (Lori), Melissa (Drew) and great grandchildren Audi and Ari. Her spirit now reunites with those who have passed on, including her beloved parents, Alvena and Russell Lessenden, and brother Donald Lessenden
Friends and family are invited to honor her life and legacy during the visitation, which will be held on May 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home located at 14275 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, Kansas. This gathering will be an opportunity to celebrate the life of a truly remarkable woman who graced our lives with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
