We celebrate the Life of Emery Carl Hinkhouse Jr. (better known as Hink by most).
Born in Correctionville, Iowa on December 18, 1917, little did the world understand the grit and determination he would exemplify throughout his life. He maintained high moral and ethical behavior and was a lifelong church member.
As a child he moved from tenant farm to tenant farm during the Great Depression. Those experiences prepared him for the life ahead. Two stints in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and then he served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.He married his wife, Evelyn Nelson, while working on a farm in St. James, Minnesota and their marriage brought four children into the world, Joyce Lillich (Bob), Audrey Haskins (Alan), David Hinkhouse (Kathleen), and Stephen Hinkhouse (Donna). He had several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He worked nights as an electrician and boiler tender at Fairbanks Morse. During the day he had his own construction crew and built houses all around the Kansas City area and beyond. He also ran a cattle business on his 160-acre farm. He was never afraid of hard work. He proved to the rest of us that we could accomplish just about anything if we “put our nose to the grindstone”, one of his favorite expressions.
He was loved for his wit and generous nature, always looking for ways he could help other people. He was looking forward to reuniting with his wife Evelyn in heaven. He kept a positive attitude and his sense of humor and wit all the way to the last few days. He is especially loved by his family and will be missed. The family is grateful that during his last days he received excellent care from Benton House assisted living and Hospice. He will be missed by many and forgotten by few.
