Dorothy June Biggs

December 18, 1937 — March 12, 2023

Beloved mother, sister and grandmother, Dorothy June Smiley Biggs, passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 12, 2023, at Brookdale Rehab in Overland Park, KS. She was born December 18, 1937, in Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of Hugh Smith Smiley and Decca Daisy Cott Smiley of Hugoton, Kansas. She was reared and attended school in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Ottawa University.

She married Arthur Devere Biggs on June 30, 1963, in Wichita, Kansas. Dorothy had a bachelor's degree in English from Wichita State University and was a school teacher until soon after the birth of their first daughter. The couple came to own and operate S&A Telephone Company in Allen, Kansas, where they raised three daughters and were active volunteers for numerous church, civic, USD251 schools, Girl Scouts and 4H activities. They divorced in 1995.

In the 1990's, she retired in Topeka where she frequently gave her time to various non-profit groups such as The Ronald McDonald House, The Woman's Club (philanthropic committee chair), Topeka First United Methodist, DAR, and Kansas Children's Service League where she volunteered as a reading tutor. She frequently volunteered as a babysitter for the children of students attending Washburn Rural High School.

Her first love was raising her three daughters and helping frequently and tirelessly with her 6 grandchildren. Other joys included spending time laughing with her sisters, cooking, playing word games, especially Scrabble, card games, especially Bridge, watching and photographing prairie fires, gardening & canning, teaching others, watching hot air balloons, travelling, and sharing research about autism resources with others. She found a lot of joy in giving to others while not expecting anything in return.

She is survived by her daughters, Elaine (Don) Minter, Desoto, KS; Marcia (Brett) Huffman, Allen, KS; Melanie (Lance) Klein, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Cort Huffman, Allen, KS; Rick (Bailey) Clancy, Olathe, KS; Logan Clancy (Maggie Schieber), Chicago, IL; Neal Huffman, Topeka, KS; Becca (Kaine) Fredrickson, Overland Park, KS; Chloe Klein, Kansas City, MO; Courtney Minter (Ryan Burns), Denver, CO; Matt Minter, St. Joseph, MO; sisters, Daisy Jewell, Albuquerque, NM; and Laura Addison, Fort Worth, TX; and nieces and nephews.

Local family gathered to celebrate the life of Dorothy, on Saturday, March 25. Extended family will gather in Albuquerque later this year. At Dorothy's request, there will be no formal service. A memorial has been set up in her name with Ronald McDonald House, where Dorothy had volunteered her time. Donations can be sent to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas, 825 SW Buchanan Street, Topeka KS 66606, or submitted on line at Click Here to donate.
