Dennis Joe Cotton

October 14, 1947 — December 27, 2023

Dennis Cotton, a resident of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 76. Born on October 14, 1947, to John and Grace Cotton in Stafford, Kansas, Dennis led a life brimming with passion, love, and commitment.

From a young age, Dennis was captivated by sports, finding immense joy in both playing and watching them. His competitive spirit thrived as he excelled in basketball and football during his childhood. His athletic journey led him to McPherson College in Kansas, where he graced the collegiate basketball team with his skills, showcasing his dedication to the sport he adored.

Beyond the court and field, Dennis found joy in golf. With an unwavering love for the game, he relished the opportunity to challenge anyone to a round, even in his later years when he delighted in sharing this passion with his two sons-in-law. His impressive collection of golf balls and clubs spoke volumes about his love for the game.

Notably, Dennis held a deep affection for Kansas State University, fondly cherishing memories created during football games in Manhattan, Kansas, surrounded by his beloved family.

A devoted professional, Dennis dedicated over 40 years to the automotive industry, fostering invaluable connections with both customers and colleagues, which he held dear to his heart.

Dennis's legacy extended far beyond his professional pursuits. Amidst a battle with cancer lasting over a decade he discovered solace and an artistic outlet through pour painting. What began as a means of expressing his emotions swiftly transformed into a passion. Dennis's artistry was marked by his immense love for his family and friends, as he often designed specific paintings for those he held closest. This passion inspired the creation of Kits for Smiles, a non-profit foundation birthed from his desire to bring joy to others fighting cancer, especially children. He firmly believed that his purpose on this earth was to craft these kits, illuminating the faces of those battling childhood cancer.

Dennis is survived by his children, Kaitlyn Lilley and her husband Carson, Emily Christensen and her husband Tyler, Kim, Kelly, and Wendy, as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His memory lives on through his siblings Jeff Cotton and his wife Rochelle, and Carol Dalton. He is also survived by his dog, Lucy, whom he loved like she was one of his children. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Cotton, siblings Marilyn and Kenneth, and one grandchild.

A memorial service celebrating Dennis's remarkable life will be held on January 3, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas. Those in attendance are encouraged to wear purple in honor of Dennis's love for Kansas State University.

Following the service, a reception will take place at the same location, allowing friends and family to come together in remembrance and to honor his beautiful legacy. Dennis will forever be remembered for his unwavering love, indomitable spirit, and his commitment to bringing joy to those around him.
