Dean was born May 26, 1936, in Bedford, Iowa to Lee Spencer and Faith (Florea) Spencer. He lived on the farm in Bedford with his siblings Helen, Margaret, William and Doris. While attending Bedford High School he met the love of his life Kay (Pace) Spencer. He graduated in 1954 and went to flight school after that. Dean and Kay were married October 29, 1955. They raised four children, David, James, Debra and Lori Ann. While they did move around some, as he was working his way to become an air traffic controller, they finally settled in Olathe, KS in 1971.
Dean and Kay were married for 51 years until her death in 2007. Still calling her his bride after all those years. He was an Air Traffic Controller until his retirement. He had other jobs after his retirement and was at Sutherlands Lumber until 2022. He was a dedicated father to all of his children and would do anything in his power for them. As a role model to his children, he provided them with guidance, discipline, a sense of responsibility that shaped their characters and prepared them for the challenges of the world. His love for his grandchildren was beyond measure. He was the best pool player around and no one could argue that. His love of playing cards was one of his favorite things too. He was an excellent craftsman, and we were all blessed to have something made by dad.
He is predeceased by his parents, wife, siblings and great grandson Cole.
Left to cherish his memory are children David Spencer (Shari), James Spencer (Teresa), Debra Martens (Ron) and Lori Ann Spencer. His grandchildren Tina, Caleb, Cori, Layne, Tayler, Ryan and Kassi. His great-grandchildren Tessa, Taylor, Jake, Carleigh, Jed, Kennedy, Dylan, Nash, Jamison and Kase.
