David Lee Peters, 70, of Paola, Kansas, passed away on November 4, 2025. He was born on September 23, 1955, in Topeka, Kansas, to Robert and Betty Peters, the third of five children.
David spent his early childhood in Topeka before the family moved to Olathe so he could attend the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD). KSD remained an important part of his life from childhood through adulthood. After graduating in 1976, he attended automotive body school in Salina, Kansas, and went on to build a lifelong career doing what he loved most — working on cars.
For more than 30 years, David worked at Eveland Brothers as a body technician. His passion for antique cars, restoration, and attention to detail made him a sought-after craftsman. He took great pride in his work, often saying there was nothing better than seeing a classic car brought back to life.
Outside of work, David was happiest when he was in his shop restoring cars, attending swap meets, or camping with his KSD friends. He also enjoyed woodworking and creating handmade items. Many will remember him for his famous homemade cinnamon rolls, which he loved to share with friends and family.
David married his first sweetheart, Linda, on October 21, 2000. They shared 10 wonderful years before her passing in 2010. Later, David found companionship with Kathy Motes, his devoted partner of 14 years. Together they enjoyed camping, playing games, and spending quiet evenings at home.
David will be remembered for his generous heart and strong work ethic. He never hesitated to help others, whether fixing a friend’s car or tracking down a hard-to-find part. His well-organized barn was a treasure trove of tools and parts, a reflection of his resourcefulness and love of projects.
David is survived by his partner, Kathy Motes; sister Sharion (Roger) Hanson; brothers Ronald (Cathie) Peters and Marvin (Pam) Peters; stepchildren Lana (Kenny) Luebbert, Shawn (Megumi) Gibbs, and Kelly Showman; and grandchildren Ben, Drew, and Aidan Luebbert, Kadena Gibbs, and Ava and Lila Showman, and many nieces and nephews he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; parents, Robert and Betty Peters; and brother, Mike Peters.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00–6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Olathe Club of the Deaf, 221 S Chestnut St, Olathe, KS 66061.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s memory may be made to Deaf Liberty Baptist Church, 7910 W 75th St, Overland Park, KS 66204.
