Carlos (Corkey) Wells, 74 passed away at his home in Overland Park, Kansas, July 9th 2022.
Corkey was born December 19th, 1947 in Dodge City Kansas to Patsy and Gene Wells. He grew up in Dodge City and enlisted in the United States Navy in January of 1965 where he served for 4 years on the Air Craft Carrier USS Bon Homme Richard during Vietnam. He then enlisted and served in the United States Army Reserve for 18 months at the Nike Missile Site in California. After leaving military service Corkey began his law enforcement career as an officer with the Dodge City Kansas Police Department. After 2 years he moved to Kansas City where he became an officer with the Olathe Police Department and was one of the first officers on their rapid water and rescue team. Corkey was hired at Westwood Police Department in August of 1976 where he served as a police officer for 3 years before being promoted to Lieutenant in 1983. In 1986 he was appointed to Chief of Police. Corkey was nominated, endorsed and selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia where he graduated on September 4th 1992 as part of the 170th Session. Corkey served as Chief Of Police for 27 years until his retirement in December of 2013.
He is preceded in death by his brother Lee Wells and his parents Patsy and Gene Wells.
Corkey is survived by his loving wife Connie Wells of 45 years, his children Stacie Garner and husband Mike, Michael Wells and wife Shiloh, Sara Wells, his 6 grandchildren Cole and Cade Garner, Jacob Moreno, Travis, Logan and Mackenzie Wells, and sister Brenda Anderson and husband Loyde and countless extended family and friends.
Corkey was a devoted husband, father and Papa. He liked golfing, fishing, hunting and racing. Corkey and Connie married in 1977 in Overland Park Kansas where they spent over 45 years building a family and life together. After his retirement he loved summering at Stockton Lake with his wife, traveling with family and enjoying each other's company. Corkey loved nothing more than hanging out and relaxing with family and friends. His life philosophy was "Life is short, eat dessert first"...and that is exactly how he lived. There is not one person who ever had the pleasure of meeting Corkey who he did not have a lasting impact on. Corkey will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
