Betty Jean Johnson

Betty Jean (Young) Johnson, age 99 passed away on July 6, 2026.
Betty was born October 3, 1926 in Boone County, MO, the
third child of Herbert Overton and Hazel Pipes Young.

Betty grew up on the family farm near Rocheport, MO where she
rode a horse 2 miles in grade school. Without moving, she attended
3 high schools graduating from Booneville HS in 1944. After high
school she attended the University of MO in Columbia until she moved
to Kansas City, KS to live with her sister Eleanor who already graduated
from the University. There they both worked in the defense industry
in Fairfax.

In November 1944 she had her first date with Edward Johnson, the
boy next door. They married on May 14, 1945 while Edward was
on leave from Marine boot camp. They were married for 75 years.

For the first 19 years they lived in KC, KS. For 11 years
they lived in Overland Park and 37 years in Leawood before
moving to Tallgrass Creek.

Betty was a P.E.O. member of the Chapter EG since 1986 and a
lifetime member of Leawood Welcomers. She was a devoted
loving mother, always passing out hugs and encouragement to
family and friends

Surviving are son Richard Johnson, Douglas Johnson(Kathryn Sikkink),
Kathy Hover(Jim), Edward Johnson Jr(Tracy) and six grandchildren:
David, Kaz, Daniel, Matthew, Tyler and Trevor. Also 2 great
grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents and siblings, Eleanor
Langford, David Young, George Young, and Bob Young and husband
of 75 years, Edward.

The family will have a celebration of life at some time. No
donations please.
