Barbara A. Hoffman

Dear Family and Friends,

Our Mother Barbara Annette Hoffman passed away July 20, 2026 at age 85. She was the eldest child born to William E. Dines and Gladys L. Dines (Goodding) on April 7, 1941 in Kansas City, MO. Two sisters, Donna and Linda, and a brother, David, would follow.

She grew up in Kansas City, MO. She attended Blessed Sacrament grade school where she met her lifelong friends Anita Malle Rogers and Frances Roth Dreiling. Mom had many interesting adventures with her friends and siblings in KC. They would ride bikes and roam the neighborhood going to Country Club Dairy for the soda fountain and Woolworth Dime Store to spend their allowance. We never saw her do this, but she took tap dancing lessons as a child. She also learned to play the piano, which we did get to hear. Birthdays were spent at Swope Park with her cousins Dianna and Bobby. Every year the family would watch the American Royal from “Daddy’s” office at the Kansas City Power & Light substation at 13th and Baltimore. They had a monumental trip in 1955 when they drove to California and she saw the ocean for the first time at Huntington Beach, CA. The family spent 11 summers vacationing at Rockaway Beach with their cousins going too. That may have inspired our famous Aunts and Cousins Weekend at the Lake years later.

Our Mom had and still does have many family members in Appleton City, MO. When they were kids her Uncle Ralph would pick them up in his delivery truck and take them to Appleton City. Their parents would join on the weekend to bring them back home. Years later Mom would be instrumental in organizing family reunions there.

She attended Hogan High School and graduated with the Class of 1958. After graduation she became a telephone operator for AT&T. She met our father when a mutual friend set them up on a date. Our Father, Robert William Hoffman and mother were married on February 4, 1961. Her next job was homemaker. Mom and Dad raised us 3 daughters, Lisa, Joyce, and Janice in Mission, KS, Overland Park, KS and Hillsdale, KS. During this time some of her accomplishments were PTA, room mother, growing flower gardens, making strawberry jam (it was so good!) and sewing. She was an excellent seamstress making clothes for our Barbie dolls and matching dresses for all us girls, sometimes including a matching dress for herself. This was something she picked up from her mother who did the same for her daughters.

After we were able to take care of ourselves, she became a part time bookkeeper, then sales associate for Spring Hill Furniture. When she decided to work full time, she took a secretarial job at Crown Realty. From there she worked her way up to real estate agent. She became a broker in 2006. Working there was her favorite job where she formed several friendships with her co-workers. She retired in 2012 but continued training new agents for a short period afterwards.

Before and after retirement she developed a great passion for genealogy. One of her proudest discoveries was to be able to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on February 6, 1982 through our ancestor Abraham Goodding. She not only researched her own family; she loved it so much she also helped others. Many friends and relatives have booklets she created for their family tree.

She was devoted to her family and maintained connections to close and distant aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout her life. She loved her grandchildren dearly and they always made her smile.

And one last item, Mom was always a devoted Chiefs and Royals fan - even this year.

She was predeceased by her parents, daughter Lisa Hoffman, sister Linda Seroka, and brother-in-law Steve Kappler. Survivors include us, her daughters Joyce (Mike) Cassidy and Janice (Scott) Asher. Grandchildren Dana (Jason) Lyons, Darren Lyons, Patrick (Bre) Cassidy, Catie (Dan) Storey, Adam (David) Asher, and Emily (Mike) Brandyberry, sister Donna Kappler, brother David (Ingrid) Dines, and brother-in-law Al Seroka. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She will be laid to rest next to our sister Lisa at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS at a private family entombment.
