Alice Joy Erwin

November 24, 1930 — July 21, 2023

Alice Joy Brinegar Erwin was born in Olive Hill, KY and lived there until marrying Carl Erwin and moving to Mansfield, Ohio near relatives.

One year after Alice and Carl were married, Kathy Joy was born and 2 1/2 years later David Carl joined the family.

Alice prayed for years for the salvation of her family members, including Carl. While Kathy was quite young, Carl became a Christian and together they raised their family to love and follow God.

Mark Allan made them a family of five in 1961, at about the same time as Carl and Alice took their first pastoral assignment in Fredericktown, Ohio.

Alice's children witnessed the love, grace, and class she brought to the parsonage wherever they served. She could take the most unappealing parsonage and turn it into a warm, welcoming home for her family and all those who ate at her table.

Alice made suits for Carl, David and Mark and dresses for herself and Kathy. There was never a feeling of being poor or going hungry because Alice always made sure her family had what they needed, even if she went without. Her cooking was known wherever she went, and one could eat off her floors as she was constantly cleaning.

Alice loved Carl and was a perfect wife for his years of ministry. After Carl passed away, her health began to decline. She often told stories of their early days in pastoral assignments.

Alice taught her family to love unconditionally and to give grace and share Jesus with everyone because of the life changing moments she had witnessed.

She began and ended every day reading her Bible and praying for each family member. When she could no longer remember all the names, she was still praying for, "those I love". When she went to bed at night, she always laid her glasses on her Bible ready to read at least one chapter from God's word.

One of the songs Alice loved most was "I Shall Know Him", and she wanted everyone to know Him as she did.

Alice was the sole survivor of her generation for both sides of the family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl D. Erwin; parents, Ora M. Brinegar and Gladys Brinegar; sisters, Edna (Anthony) Frascone and Emogene (William) McCabe; brothers, Ralph (Loretta) Brinegar and Ora M. Brinegar, Jr.; nephew, David M. Brinegar; and her in-laws, Delbert and Thelma Erwin, Glen and Katherine Erwin, Wylie and Jenny Erwin, and Emogene and Russell Click.

Alice is survived by her children, Kathryn Walter, David (Becky) Erwin, Mark (Kim) Erwin; grandchildren, Ellise Swanson,Taylor Erwin, Morgan Erwin, Alyssa (Luke) Walter Johnson, Amanda Walter Ayers, Erin (Phil) Rexroth, Kristin (Brandon) Hill; great grandchildren, Max and Abby Johnson, Lyla Ayers, Amarra Swanson, Carter and Jayden Johnson Haley, Harper and Finley Rexroth, Maddox and Hayes Hill.

Alice was known to her grandchildren and great children as Grammie and Gigi. All were blessed to have her in their life, and Alice will be glad to see all her family again someday.

What a wonderful heritage!
