William “Joe” L. Fogo, Jr., 91, of Platte City, Missouri, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 12, 2022.
Joe was born January 6, 1931, on a farm in Whitemound Township, in Jewell County, Kansas to William L. Fogo, Sr. and Nellie Sinaloa Calahan. He was the tenth of eleven children. He also had a half-brother from his father’s previous marriage. All of his siblings are now deceased except for his younger brother.
Times were very different in the 1930’s as Joe was growing up. He and all his siblings attended a one-room school house, complete with outdoor “plumbing” and a coal house. The teacher taught all eight grades at a “recitation bench”. Joe graduated from Burr Oak High School and enrolled at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. It wasn’t long before the Korean War broke out, and Joe enlisted in the Air Force, where he would serve for the next four years.
After his Air Force tour, Joe returned to the Midwest and enrolled at what is now the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He majored in Accounting, and went on to earn the title of “Certified Public Accountant”. After traveling and auditing, he met Nola Dean Buckow in 1955, and they wed on November 8, 1958. A daughter, Janice, was born to Nola and Joe in 1960. After relocating to Davenport, Iowa, their daughter Sherryl (Sherry) was born in 1964. In 1966, the family relocated to Des Moines, Iowa, and eventually moved to Altoona, Iowa. They were residents of Iowa for 35 years.
Joe was a voracious checker player from the time he was very young. He competed and won championships throughout his teenage years. He was even known to sit at a table during state fairs and play several players at a time, rarely losing a game. In his mid to later years, he also enjoyed playing chess, and was hard to beat. In addition to Joe’s chess playing, he also enjoyed a good game of ping-pong, he was a great gardener, and he loved to sing. He had a wonderful tenor voice, and sang numerous times in his church through the years.
Joe loved the Lord Jesus very much. Of all the things in his life, he would consider this to be the most important thing to be remembered for. He served the Lord through serving people, providing Biblical education for his girls at home in addition to teaching children at church, singing God’s praises as a part of worship services, serving pastors by helping with their tax returns, and later assisting in conducting worship services for senior citizens at their facility.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Janice (Mark) Means; brother Rodney (Rada) Fogo; grandchildren Ryan (Rebekah) Means; Tiffany Means; great-grandchildren Naomi, Lydia and Emily.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nola, and his daughter, Sherry.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at College Church of the Nazarene Garrett Chapel, in Olathe, Kansas at 2 pm. The graveside service will be the following day at Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Kansas, at 2 pm.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to College Church of the Nazarene “His Fellowship” Sunday School or Weston Church of the Nazarene.
