Michael Brian DeMoss, 51 of KCMO passed away at his home on Thursday, November 25, 2021 due to health complications.
Michael was born February 12, 1970 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. He was the son of Billy E. and Sharon L. (Thompson) DeMoss and was the younger brother of Melanie DeMoss. Later in life as Bill and Sharon demonstrated the immensity of their Christlike love to others, Woody Nouth Chea came to live in their home and came to call Michael his brother after having lived in the refugee camps in Cambodia.
Michael attended Washington Elementary School (Olathe), Santa Fe Trail Junior High (Olathe) and Olathe High School and graduated in the class of 1988. Michael went on to attend Emporia State University to receive his bachelor’s degree and later his Master of Instructional Technology at Webster University.
Michael began his career as an educator in the Olathe School District and was a first and fifth grade teacher at Mahaffie Elementary School in Olathe when it opened its doors in 1991. In 1998 he moved to Dallas, Texas, and pursued careers in technology training with various companies. However, Michael returned to teaching at Ben Milam Elementary School and taught for the Dallas Independent School District, where he loved his primarily Hispanic population of students. On one occasion, Michael rented a school bus and took all the students in his class to the Galleria Ice Skating Center where many of his students experienced ice skating for the first time in their lives. He spearheaded fundraisers and brought businesses from the city into the schools for financial support and assistance with education at Ben Milam.
Michael loved participating in philanthropic efforts such as the Easter in the Park Pooch Parade where individuals would dress their pooch in Easter style attire and parade along the Turtle Creek parade route. Winners were selected by a panel of local celebrity judges to raise funds and awareness of rescued pets in the greater Dallas area, an effort near and dear to his heart. He loved line dancing and was known to kick up his heels to Looking for a City by the Happy Goodmans.
Before moving back to the Kansas City area, Michael worked at Parkland Hospital as an IT trainer with the Epic Electronic Health Records system. Back in Kansas City, Michael had careers at both KU Med Center and Black and Veatch.
Anyone who knew Michael knew that he could walk into a room, and it would light up with positivity. He brought people together from all walks of life and he never knew a stranger. He broke barriers for people to forge friendships and he loved making people laugh. He had a gift for connecting with people. Time and time again, people say that Michael made time for them and listened, and in some cases say that he saved their life with his kind and caring words.
Michael was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood Kansas and later as he struggled with health issues and turned to alcohol, he was involved in Resurrection Recovery and made many friendships with people from all walks of life who had some of the same struggles.
His family loved his humor; his enormous heart for others; his championship of little four-legged friends who were less fortunate; his love of the city he called home and all things KC, but most of all his love of Christ that he demonstrated through both his words and actions to others.
He is preceded in death by his father, Billy E. DeMoss. He leaves behind his mother, Sharon DeMoss of Olathe, his sister Dr. Melanie DeMoss of Olathe, his brother Woody Chea and sister-in-law Lena Nouth of Springhill. He has nieces Nakita Nouth-Chea and Makaila Nouth-Chea of Springhill. Additionally, he leaves behind many extended family members and great friends and his cat Miss Chloe, all of whom loved him dearly.
A Celebration of his Life will be on this Saturday, December 4th at 10am in the Wesley Chapel at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection located at 13720 Roe Avenue Leawood Kansas. Please join us as we celebrate Michael.
