Lavern Gene "Vern" Schallehn Life story video

L. G. SCHALLEHN "VERN", 86, of Prairie Village, Kansas and The Villages, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021 at St Luke's Hospital on the Plaza with his family by his side.

Vern was born on July 15th, 1935 in rural Lyon County (Emporia), Kansas. He was raised on a farm and was proud that he learned to fix almost anything because of that upbringing. Vern was the youngest of three boys born to Edward John and Esther Ruth Schallehn. He met his wife of 64 years, Nancy, as a senior at Emporia High School and they married after college graduation from Emporia State University in 1957. He earned a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting.

While working in Topeka with an accounting firm, Vern earned his CPA license. His professional life in Kansas City started with the CPA firm, Troupe, Kehoe, Whittaker and Kent where he became their Audit Manager. Vern then worked as the CPA for the Dickenson Theater and Hotel chain. However, he wanted a CPA firm of his own and started his own firm - L. G. SCHALLEHN, CPA - in 1979. Vern enjoyed his profession and especially enjoyed interacting with his clients. When you came to see Vern he always wanted to help you, but also wanted to visit for a while just to "catch up." Vern was a hard worker, sharp minded, strong willed, honest almost to a fault and very ethical. He never wanted to completely retire and didn't, helping clients until his death.

Vern was in the Armed Forces Reserves (Army and Air Force) for seven years. He felt lucky to be a clerk typist in an air conditioned office, instead of out in the field, during basic training and summer camps. Since he served in peace time, he was a veteran without benefits.

Vern became a Kiwanian soon after moving to Kansas City. He enjoyed meetings at the Old Mission Kiwanis club and made many friends. He was the Treasurer for the State of Kansas Kiwanis Clubs for seven years. He and Nancy enjoyed visiting many Kiwanis clubs throughout the State of Kansas and attending Kansas and National Kiwanis conventions.

Vern enjoyed Boy Scout activities with Steve. Vern served as treasurer for Troop 199 where Steve earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Vern enjoyed helping the scouts sell Christmas Trees and participating in many camping and hiking trips, including Philmont.

Traveling was a love of Vern's in later years, both in the US and internationally. Nancy and Vern were square dancers, in the Sunflower Squares club, for many enjoyable years. What nice friends and memories. Vern was a big Kansas City Chiefs fan and had season tickets for over 35 years. He would say - Go Chiefs!

Vern and Nancy also has a home in The Villages, Florida and shared time between there and Prairie Village. He moved to The Villages mainly because of his interest in golf and the Florida style of life. However, he always had to be home in KC to prepare income taxes each spring. Vern also enjoyed spending time on the farm and the Lake of the Ozarks.

His family was very important to Vern and he loved them very much. He leaves behind his wife, Nancy, son Steve and daughter Gena, and her husband Scott McDonald, and two very special grandchildren, Jack and Alec. Vern also leaves behind his brother Ross, sister-in-law Patricia, and nephews/niece Tim, Joel, Janna, Jeff, Doug, and their families.

A memorial service for Vern will be held at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home (14275 S. Black Bob Road) on Friday, September 10 at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, we suggest a memorial contribution to either Kansas Kiwanis Foundation, PO Box 3628, Olathe, KS 66063 or Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, Kansas 66205.

Vern’s family would like to thank all the people who have been an important part of his life.
