Robert “Bob” Ellis Payne, 83 of Gardner, Kansas passed away peacefully on Monday February 8, 2021 with loving family at his side. Bob was born September 14, 1937 in Maple, Missouri to Carl and Myrth (Zirker) Payne.

Bob attended Great Falls High School in Great Falls, Montana and received his GED in Olathe, Ks in 1977 which he was so proud of. Bob joined the United States Navy (Air Sea Rescue/Aviation Ordinance) and served from 1955 to 1958 with an Honorable discharge. He met Marie Shaffer August 1956 and married December 1, 1956 at the Marine Training Center in San Diego, California and lived there a year before he got shipped to Guam. From 1958 to 1968 he worked at Gulf Oil Company as a Millwright/Maintenance worker in Pittsburgh, Ks. Bob and Marie moved to Olathe, Ks in 1968 where he got a job at Bendix Corporation as a Millwright/Maintenance worker from 1968 to 1973. From 1973 to 1994 he worked at Colgate Palmolive as a Safety Coordinator/Millwright which he retired from. After retirement he started driving a school bus for various local school districts until March of 2020 due to Covid. He loved talking & seeing all the kids. When school holidays came around he would give out treats to his kids. Various Olathe High Schools would ask specifically for Bob to drive their sports teams, debate teams to events. There was one Football Team that was superstitious if Bob didn’t drive their bus. In his early years after retirement during the summer he worked for Deer Creek & Shadow Glen Golf Course as a Maintenance Supervisor which he loved to golf. In the early 70’s he was very active within the Olathe Community umpire, referee. Bob remarried April 2, 2005 to Carol Parks after the death of his first Love Marie due to Cancer. Bob loved to travel, watch history channel, golf, hunt, fish camp and pan gold. He loved the outdoor life. He especially loved to spend time with family and friends and was quite the jokester. He brought a smile to everyone’s face just being around him. Everyone loved him that knew him he will be deeply missed by all and in our hearts forever.
