Mary L. Mathews, 96, of Overland Park, KS, (formerly of Topeka) passed away January 18, 2021 at Sunrise of Leawood.

She was born on February 3,1924 to George and Emma (Hennings) Reboul in Barnes, KS. She spent most of her childhood and early adult life in Seneca, KS, graduating from Seneca High School. There she met and later married the milkman, Charles E. Mathews, on January 19, 1952 in Falls City, NE.

They then moved to Topeka, KS where they began married life and raised their family.
Mary enjoyed her career as a homemaker, devoting her life to raising her children. She employed her excellent sewing skills to create clothes for herself & her daughters. Her true joy was found in the kitchen, a fantastic cook making nutritious & delicious meals and baking tasty treats. She also enjoyed home design, decorative arts and crafts, knitting, & crochet.

Her grandchildren have held a special place in her heart, and in recent years her great grands as well.

She was a member of Central United Presbyterian Church in Topeka, KS, and spent a few years working there as church secretary.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Pamela Mathews Vernon (Richard – deceased) of Leawood, KS, Carol A. Hamilton (Thomas) of Topeka, KS, grandchildren Matthew Hamilton (Bethanee) of Olathe, KS, Christin Barkemeyer (Keith) of Topeka, KS, & Nicole Hamilton of Lawrence, KS, great-grandchildren Caroline & James Barkemeyer and Henry & Madeline Hamilton. She is also survived by her sister, Rebecca Grimm, of Falls City, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles E. (Bud) Mathews.

A memorial service is to be held at a later date due to Covid concerns.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission.
