In Memory Of
Jean Ruth McCaslen
1929 - 2020

Jean Ruth McCaslen, age 91, passed away December 19, 2020 from complications of Covid 19. She was born November 4, 1929 in Pickrell, Nebraska to Carl and Lucille Lisk. She fell in love and married Ernest (Moe) McCaslen on February 28, 1948 who preceded her in death in 2007.

Jean and Moe believed in working hard and playing hard together. They loved their farm in Adair County, Iowa and together they enjoyed wood crafts, painting, gardening, quilting, canning, and countless other hobbies. Jean worked outside the home as a bookkeeper at a time when that was less common, retiring from Farmer’s Electric Cooperative. After retiring Jean and Moe traveled together on motorcycles and enjoyed trips to Branson, South Dakota, Nashville, and of course, the little towns around Greenfield for supper.

When their kids were in grade school, Jack and Marcella Waltz invited the family to go to Lake McKinley in Creston for a day of boating. Jean took to water skiing right away and popped up like a cork and went all the way around Lake McKinley. Jack said “That will cost you a boat, Moe.” He was right and that began generations of the family’s enjoyment of boats, whether the boats were canoes, sailboats, or power boats.

In 2016 Jean was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and moved to Overland Park to be closer to her daughter. The blessing for the family was that when she died, she still knew family members and could interacted positively. Staff members at The Sheridan loved her and she loved them.

Preceding Jean in death were her husband, Moe McCaslen, parents, Carl and Lucille Lisk, two brothers, Harold and Norman Lisk, son in law, Duane Deo and grandson Shane McCaslen. Surviving her is her brother, Jim Lisk and wife, Myra, her daughter, Rosalie (Lea) Deo and her son, Ron and Ron’s wife, Jackie, grandchildren, Aaron McCaslen, Luke McCaslen, Aimee Perkins, Christopher Deo, and Ryan Deo. Also surviving are 9 great grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews, many of whom fondly recall good times at Uncle Moe and Aunt Jean’s farm.

Services will be held January 8 at The Fontanelle Lutheran Church, Fontanelle, Iowa at 1:00 pm. with family visitation at the church at noon. Burial will be at the Greenfield cemetery. Donations can be given to the Jean McCaslen memorial fund.
