In Memory Of
Walter Lee Stockdale
1931 - 2020

Walter Lee Stockdale of Overland Park, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord on October 15th. He was 89 years old.

Walter was born May 1, 1931 and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. His family included his parents George and Lottie Stockdale, four brothers, and two sisters. Walter married Anna Marie Smith in 1955. Walter and Anna had two daughters, Pam and Vicki, and were happily married for 65 years.

Walter was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps for over 23 years. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and did two tours of duty in Japan. He retired from the Marine Corps at the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. After retiring from the military, he worked for Sunkist Growers for 20 years. He then retired to an active life with his beloved wife and family.

Having been a fighter jet mechanic, and later a pilot safety instructor, Walter could fix practically anything. He did home improvements, worked on cars, and fixed his grandchildren’s toys. He watched movies with his grandchildren on Wednesday nights so his wife and daughters could have girls night out. He enjoyed films and had a standing date every Sunday afternoon with Anna for dinner and a movie. Until his declining health limited his activities, he and Anna enjoyed walking together, discussing current events, watching the news, cooking holiday meals together and simply spending life together. In recent years and months they especially treasured sitting together holding hands and discussing their long years of life together.

Walter is survived by his wife Anna Stockdale of Overland Park; two daughters, Pamela Hollifield, wife of Gary, and Vicki Zielsdorf, widow of Scott; nine grandchildren, Lisa Peterson, wife of Jonathan, Michael Zielsdorf, husband to Erin, Stacy Hollifield, Christopher Zielsdorf, Justin Hollifield, Kelly Hollifield, Nicholas Zielsdorf, Matthew Zielsdorf and Carly Hollifield; eight great-grandchildren; his brother George Stockdale of Independence, Missouri; and his sister Mary Longdon of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Walter will be greatly missed by those who love him. The world will be a poor place without him in it.

Services will be held Monday, October 26, 2020 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
