ROBERT GEORGE THURMAN (1926-2020) Robert (Bob) George Thurman, 94, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Olathe, KS, where he was recuperating from a broken hip.

Bob was born September 29, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri to George and Lucy (Munsterman) Thurman who preceded him in death. He graduated from Paseo High School in 1943. In 1944 he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII at a very young age, one of the last of his generation. The Navy sent him to Purdue University Electrical Engineering training in 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.

Upon his return home, Bob attended college at the University of Kansas and continued his studies in Electrical Engineering. He graduated with a Bachelors in Engineering in June of 1950. He met his future wife Nellie at the Lutheran church youth group. Nellie worked at the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company as a secretary and told Bob about an Engineering job opening. After he was hired, Nellie and Bob married on July 1, 1949 and Nellie quit her job to raise the family. Bob retired from Panhandle Eastern after 38 and a half years in 1988.

He was a loving husband and father raising their children and encouraging his wife. They had five children: Cathleen, Richard, Terence, Kenneth and Timothy, three grand-children, and three great-grandchildren. Nellie preceded him in death and passed away in 2017, and he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cathleen, and his sister Ellene Hoffman. Bob is also survived by his brother John (wife Joann) Thurman of Elsinore, Missouri, and his brother-in-law, Chuck Hoffman.

He enjoyed taking his family camping and fishing. He was also an active member in six Lutheran churches, since Bob's employer relocated his job numerous times. Bob and Nellie were members of Advent Lutheran Church in Olathe, KS.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 2 from 10-11am at Advent Lutheran Church, 11800 W. 151st St., Olathe, KS followed by funeral services to begin at 11am. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to Advent Lutheran Church.
