Lorin E. Smith, 67, of Overland Park, KS passed away Thursday July 16, 2020.

Lorin Edward "Ed" Smith was born November 29, 1952 in Kinsley, KS to Kate Marie “Katie” Wagner-Smith-Henry and Lorin Eugene Smith. Lorin graduated from Colby High School in Colby, KS in 1970. He studied Journalism at the University of Kansas in the 70's and earned his BA Degree in English from UMKC in Kansas City in 1995. Lorin's career highlights in Lawrence and Kansas City included restaurant management, cleaning business ownership and an executive position for the Apartment Association of Kansas City. His love of writing led him to work at Unity Village in Lee's Summit, MO where he later chose to join their Silent Unity division as a Prayer Counselor. He retired from Unity in 2010. He lived in Topeka, KS after retirement and returned to Kansas City in 2018. Lorin was very active in AA in every community he lived in. He was a witty, cheerful, loyal friend and caring counsel to so many including those he sponsored through his years in AA. He loved classical music as well as classic rock. He was a curious student of nature and spirituality, a talented calligrapher, an avid reader and wonderfully creative writer. He loved to eat and share his excellent culinary skills. He was a passionate Jayhawks basketball fan and loved animals, especially dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his sisters Barbara Henry-Besser-O’Brien of Colby, KS and Miriam Henry of Kansas City, MO, his niece Natasha Besser of Colby, KS and his nephews Nicholas Henry of Colby, KS and Kevin Besser of Colby, KS.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Unity Village, Lee’s Summit, MO www.unity.org or Positive Connections, Topeka, KS www.PCNEKS.org.

A celebration of life at Unity Village is planned for Spring of 2021.
