In Memory Of
Marvin A. Lickteig
1934 - 2020

Our beloved Papa, Marvin Lickteig, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2020 surrounded by love and with his beautiful wife Joann and six loving children at his side.

Marvin Lickteig grew up in Garnett, KS as the second oldest of 10 children. In 1955, he married the love of his life JoAnn Bell and they would have been married for 65 years on February 9th. Marvin and Joann were active members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church since moving to Olathe in the 50s. They believed in God and family first and foremost. The large family gatherings held on holidays are memories we will hold forever in our hearts. They taught us how to love one another and he was the epitome of a male role model for all of us. He loved children and could hold a crying baby in his arms, and they would calm down. He loved to love and showed it in his quiet, but ornery demeanor.

Marvin was one of the hardest working man ever to walk the earth. He was a farm worker with his father and his Uncle Art from 1948-1955. In January of 1956, Marvin went to work for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He began in Kansas Turnpike material testing and then transferred to the construction department in October of 1957. He worked his way all the way up to Engineer Tech Senior and did important things such as surveying for the building of I-35. Marvin not only worked every day for the state highway, he had many part-time jobs at the same time. He worked part time for King Radio, St. Paul’s Church, and a painting business throughout the years. He took pride in providing for his family and showed us how to work hard to achieve our goals. He retired from KDOT on June 10, 1997 with 42 years of credited service. He still could not sit still. He got a job at Robert Brogden transferring cars for them during his retirement until he could no longer do the work.

Survivors include his wife, Joann Lickteig of the home, Dennis(Kathleen) Lickteig of Olathe, Rebecca Lickteig of the home, Joleene Sullivan of Lawrence, Dale(LeeAnn) Lickteig of Olathe, Rhonda(Frank) Nichols of Olathe, Dean Lickteig of Olathe, 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. He also had numerous extended family members, step grandchildren and godchildren.

For those who would like to express condolences, visitation will take place from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, February 3, 2020, at Penwell Gabel’s Olathe Chapel, with the Rosary at 7:30pm. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, followed by burial in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery also in Olathe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the building fund at St. Paul Catholic Church, 21650 W 115th Terrace, Olathe, KS 66061.
